The most telling AI story in education right now isn't about software. It's about paper.
Campus bookstores have been reporting sharp jumps in blue book sales, the humble stapled exam booklets most of us assumed were headed for the museum. There's a second benefit nobody markets: it protects honest students. Nobody gets flagged by a probability model for writing too cleanly in a blue book. Given how detector false positives actually land, that alone justifies some retreat to paper for high-stakes moments.
What it quietly doesn't fix
Here's the arithmetic problem. Exams are a few hours a term. The other several hundred hours of a student's learning happen at home, at night, on a laptop, and that's exactly where AI lives. Surveys of university students now put generative AI use in assessments at nearly nine in ten. A blue book final doesn't touch any of that. It just moves the grade weight toward the one format you can verify, and concedes the rest of the term to the fog.
Concede enough of it and you get a strange outcome: homework stops meaning anything, so professors weight it near zero, so students stop doing it, so the exam becomes the entire course. Assessment gets AI-proof by getting narrower. That's not integrity. That's retreat.
And the skill being protected shifts too. Timed handwriting rewards recall and speed under pressure. The drafting, revising, researching kind of thinking, the kind most careers actually use, happens in precisely the settings blue books can't reach.
The middle that's missing
The blue book comeback is schools solving a visibility problem with furniture. The real question was never "paper or pixels." It's whether you can see how work gets done on the devices where it gets done.
